Roof-Coating\Water-Proofing

Protection of building substrates from rain water still the most common problem that building designers and owners are worry about although many advances have been made in the roof coatings industry.

Rainwater or snow-thaw may cause,  if roofing protection is not well performed, water ingress inside building and a lot of damages in the interior coating, furniture, decoration, and also reduction in the thermal insulation due to wall and ceiling dampness.

Although roofing technology is well understood, its application is critical. The selection of products that best fit a specific project's requirements and applying roof coatings according to manufacturers' recommendations and specifications are of great importance for a successful protection.

Another decisive factor for successful roofing protection is a proper surface preparation prior to applying roofing materials.

Surface preparation:

  1. Be sure that roof slopes are designed in the direction of water exclusion areas. Any heavily ponded water area (excessive accumulation of water at low-lying area) should be covered by STOP200 or  by an admixture of hydraulic cement and SBR AZ Ultra to obtain a positive slope of the roof  allowing rain water to run toward water exclusion areas.

  2. Fill blow holes and cracks by STOP200 or STOP200 Flex.

  3. Fill joints between similar or dissimilar substrates with WT25 or STOP200.

  4. Smoothen the surface of rough concrete by applying a thin coat of Flexcoat.

  5. Water reservoirs and dishes bases should be cleaned and treated by applying WT25 joint sealant.

  6. Prime and seal surface porosity (close or plug the capillaries and pores in the concrete) by WT01. It is recommended to apply WT01 by brush in order to bind any remaining dust and to make sure that the following coat is more securely bonded.

Coating:

Three kinds of waterproof and damp-proof  coatings are available at Azmeh Co.:

  1. WT16 (white): is a water emulsion acrylic roofcoating. It provides excellent adhesion and flexibility even at low temperatures. WT16 provides also thermal insulation to the substrate due to its white color that reflects sun lights and to its resistance to the effects of ultra-violet light. WT16 can be used on well prepared surfaces or over polyurethane foams (for thermal insulation) or over slabs. WT16 is suitable to be applied on relatively damp substrates and does not require any topcoat.

  2. WT18 (black): An economical waterproof and damp-proof coating based on water emulsion bitumen modified polymer. it provides a highly flexible waterproof and damp-proof membrane suitable to be applied on well prepared surfaces and also between the thermal insulation boards and concrete substrate. WT18 is recommended to be used in sandwich construction and as a general-purpose waterproof and damp-proof coating for concrete foundations, walls, floors, and other structures. And also as a protective coating for concrete below ground.

It is recommended to cover WT18 by a suitable construction material such as slabs or concrete slabs as the black color affects thermal insulation.  Polyethylene boards could also be used for the protection of treated concrete walls from aggregates.

  3. Bituproof S (black): A waterproof and damp-proof solvent base bitumen modified polymer. Used on a wide range of well prepared substrates and also on metal surfaces. it provides excellent tensile strength and a highly adherent and elastic waterproof and damp-proof membrane even at low temperatures. Prior to application, be sure that the substrate is completely dry. Bituproof S is suitable to be coated with an alkyd based paint (aluminum or white) for decoration, protection from UV light, and to reduce heat absorption.

Notes:

  1. Apply waterproofing materials to walls and slabs to ensure good insulation properties.

  2. It is recommended to apply EPX17 as primer on low porous slabs or masonry substrates.
  3. The elasticity of the applied coat is directly proportional to the coat thickness, a minimum coating thickness of 500 microns is required to ensure good insulation properties.
  4. It is recommended to apply a thin coat of wash primer (WP) to the metal part of the substrate prior to waterproofing.
